Incredible suspense, talented and determined young champions, sporting feats, a major course in peak condition and most of all a winner after a play-off: the 5th Jabra Ladies Open, with a purse of € 200,000, lived up to all expectations.
After a relentless battle and a play-off on hole 18 of the Champions Course at the Evian Resort Golf Club, the young 17-year-old Slovenian Pia Babnik claims victory over the defending champion Annabel Dimmock (aged 24) to qualify for The Amundi Evian Championship to be held from 22 to 25 July 2021 and for the 2021 AIG Women’s British Open.
A relentless battle and a play-off on hole 18
On this day Saturday 5 June, with only 73 players left after the cut (+9), the Evian Resort Golf Club witnessed a superb spectacle in the 3rd and final round of the 2021 Jabra Ladies Open. The final round was a relentless battle, followed by a gripping play-off between Annabel Dimmock and Pia Babnik.
Pia Babnik, in the penultimate pairing, began her round on 3-under (69/70), double bogeyed hole 1 and played the front nine in 2 over par. On the back 9, she managed to turn things around with 3 birdies on 10, 17 and 18. She finished her round on 70 (-1) for an aggregate score of -4.
Annabel Dimmock, in the final pairing, was on 3-under as she teed-off from 18 and relied on her short game to make birdie and take her place in the play-off. Just like the 2019 champion, Pia Babnik knows the host course of the Jabra Ladies Open well, having taken part in The Evian Juniors Cup in 2015 and 2016, one of the competitions in The Amundi Evian Championship galaxy, which each year brings together the world’s top under-14 amateurs on the only Major championship course in continental Europe.
In the play-off, Pia Babnik took the lead by putting to make birdie. The English-player, under pressure, was just a few inches wide of the hole on a 2-yard putt to only make par, which meant defeat. And so Pia Babnik wins, with style, the first title of her short career on the Ladies European Tour.
With this win at the Jabra Ladies Open, co-sanctioned by the LET, Pia Babnik qualifies for two major championships - The Amundi Evian Championship and the 2021 AIG Women’s British Open - plus receives her LET tour card for 2022. “I’m so happy, this is an amazing moment” exclaims the winner.
