HAPPY 25 !

Fight for women’s golf

One watchword: “Fight for women’s golf by launching an event at which the players could do their job in the best possible conditions.” This is more than just a tournament, it is a human adventure that knows no limits, driven by proactive men and women, determined players, active sponsors and passionate fans.“These guys dream big”, Mike Whan, LPGA Tour boss, likes to remind us when talking of the Riboud-Bungert duo. A dream that gives the event wings and earns admiration from the realm of top-level sport.

Crowned with Major status

Originally a European tour invitational, the Evian Masters rapidly grew in importance to take its place at the top of international golf. Co-sanctioned by the US and European tours in 2000, it received the ultimate recognition in 2013 by being awarded Major status. This status rewards a vision and reflects the support provided by all the champions who have helped write the tournament’s story over the past 25 years. They include Helen Alfredsson, Angela Stanford, Annika Sörenstam, Laura Davies, Lorena Ochoa, Ai Miyazato, Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie, Inbee Park and Lydia Ko, to name just a few. The centenarian course, created in 1904 and totally renovated in 2013, is improved each year to provide The Evian Championship with a venue fitting for its status.

25 years devoted to women golfers and the future of global golf

A tournament spanning 25 years working for the champions, the exposure of women’s golf in particular and the future of world golf in general, coupled with an ongoing commitment to young players to promote the emergence of the talents of tomorrow. More than just a tournament, an entire galaxy.

A tournament unlike any other... “Our Masters” is what the champions say....

The only Major of its kind. Since 1994, the Evian Masters has managed to impose its vision of women’s world golf, going from an invitational on the European Tour to the Evian Championship, one of the 5 Grand Slam Majors. Over the years it has stood up for its values of excellence and performance.

“I am proud to have supported the particularly stringent eligibility criteria through thick and thin. The tournament has now really gained recognition. And players who are here are so proud.” Franck Riboud (2004)

Girl Power

Right from the early years, the leading women golfers supported the tournament, becoming its best ambassadors. Helen Alfredsson, the first winner in 1994 and the only player to win the event three times, confirmed this on behalf of all the players: “We will always be here for Franck and Jacques.” For 25 years, the world’s golfing elite has flocked to Evian. “An incredible location, a fantastic course, a really special atmosphere”, commented Lorena Ochoa. “Welcoming and friendly”, added Laura Davies. “In the USA, the players see the Evian Masters as something special. It’s not just about one thing. It’s France, Evian, this spot of paradise, a superb course and the great hospitality. The ladies love coming here. And most of all, it’s really hard to qualify, which makes the Evian Masters highly coveted. A tournament with such a different sparkle.

LEGENDS UPFRONT

From iconic golfers and sporting legends to ministers and a prince passionate about the “top-level” game, the world of golf and sport has given recognition and support to The Evian Championship from one year to the next. They all belong to the big Evian Championship family and include the incredibly inspiring Jean-Claude Killy, the event’s ambassador, Thomas Björn, who was present in Evian a week before the Ryder Cup win, Zinedine Zidane, Bernhard Langer, Severiano Ballesteros, Thomas Levet, Gary Player, Jean- François Lamour and Albert de Monaco...

The Evian Resort’s strength lies in grouping the dedicated golf facilities and the hospitality areas on one single site. Working in incredible synergy and constantly striving for quality, the course at the Evian Resort Golf Club, the Academy and the luxury hotels - Hôtel Royal*****Palace and Hôtel Ermitage**** - have consistently evolved to provide a high-end golfing experience. For a unique moment on a par with The Evian Championship’s major status.

Evolution, revolution: the Evian Resort Golf Club continues to assert its strong identity, enhanced by its timeless setting and plentiful nature surrounded by lake and mountains, and its own specific code of flowers, stone and wood. The new layout adds an even more strategic dimension to the course along with a very precise and spectacular vision across all 18 holes, providing a distinct signature, and all part of its commitment to environmental protection.

A few noteworthy holes? Hole 2, a raised par 3 with the lake as its backdrop, hole 5 with viewpoints of the Dent d’Oche mountain and the lake, and the famous “Evian Puzzle”, the crucial sequence of holes 15, 16, 17 and 18 at the heart of the course.

Since 1994, Evian has been a very special tournament held dear by champions, who are the centre of attention. The players embrace this pioneering spirit, which brings a fresh approach while ensuring sporting performance remains paramount, providing them with a unique showcase to express and hone their image. It’s showtime all over the golf club, be it on the fairways or in the hospitality areas. Inspiring, avant-garde, exciting... A look back at 25 years of golf fashion trends and explosive celebrations.

After the pressures of top-level golf, it’s time to relax! In Evian, the champions are happy and generous, sharing, expressing and letting go of their emotions.... to the delight of the spectators.

Friends & Family first. Since the very first edition, everything has been designed so that the players can do their job in the best possible conditions. They are welcomed to the resort with their family or friends and are totally pampered.

Evian is a unique experience created by the perfect synergy between an international golf event and its magical venue, the Evian Resort. A unique
moment for all those present: players and caddies, guests and sponsors and
the general public. For 25 years, the organization teams have been driven by the same motivation: be creative, daring and unpredictable. Night and day!

Nights

The Evian Championship’s evening? Magical, festive, unconventional... The Hôtel welcome The Evian Championship’s guests and players and invest all of their expertise and experience in luxury hospitality into making the moments unforgettable.

Days

All facets of golf can be found at the Evian Resort’s facilities devoted to the Major. At the highly coveted pro-ams, meet with golf enthusiasts such as Hugh Grant, Thomas Gibson, Dany Boon, Inès Sastre, Laurent Blanc, Guy Forget...

One of the Evian Championship’s driving forces is to use the event’s strength and prominence to boost global golf and give the top young talents the opportunity to express themselves on the course. The Juniors Cup was created in 2007 opening the way for many other key events for young players. A closer look at those who are already part of tomorrow’s world of golf.

Mixed events exclusively for young players

“Sport is elitist”, Franck Riboud replied. “And it is through the elite that we can create aspirations.” From then on, every effort has been made to implement a youth policy.

A springboard to success

Aiding the emergence of the talents of tomorrow also means giving them access to the most select tournaments.

Wildcards for the leading amateurs

The Evian Championship is one of the rare majors to support young talents and in particular amateurs who are awarded 3 of its 4 wildcards. The winners of the Rolex Girls Junior Player
of the Year, the Annika Award presented by 3M and the Arnold Palmer Cup are given the opportunity to take part in The Evian Championship.

Evian, a stepping stone to success?

A few names that say it all: Rose Zhang, Albane Valenzuela, Aditi Ashok, Leona Maguire, Hae Ran Ryu, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth... have all walked in the footsteps of the champions at the Evian Masters and then The Evian Championship before shining in the big league.
