At the helm of a whole ecosystem based on sporting performance and excellence, The Evian Championship is already reasserting its policy of actions and partnerships in favour young people. A decision driven by its Chairman, Franck Riboud, to use the Major's visibility and strength to create a global springboard for the next generation of international players. New actions have been implemented in this direction. A detailed look.
Firstly, this ever-increasing commitment to working towards golf's future involves the global reach of the qualifying events, which offer a total of 5 spots to compete in The Evian Championship 2017. Important change - the European Qualifiers take place at the Jabra Ladies Open, on a rise as it becomes a stage on the LETAS. The top 2 players qualify for The Evian Championship 2017. The US Qualifiers will award two spots following the PHC Classic on the Symetra Tour early August. A specific tour, the 2017 Evian Challenge Series, has been created for the Asian Qualifiers, with 8 tournaments held between 8 May and 14 August, further to which the best performing player will receive their ticket for the Major.
Further important news for the 2017 season, the signing of a partnership with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA): a host of actions are being implemented that totally resonate with the ambition to use the Evian Championship platform to aid the development of young talents, offering them the best support in their sport and promoting the emergence of champions. To this avail, a new wildcard has been awarded to the Rolex Girls Junior Player of the Year 2016, with young amateur Paphangkorn Tavatanakit (aged 17) earning her place for The Evian Championship 2017. The UCLA college player and Thai number 1 amateur, already showed what she was made of in 2014 at the Callaway Junior World Championship shooting an incredible 60 (-12), an amazing feat.
The Evian Championship platform has really taken off with the creation of new events specifically for the top international amateurs to further improve the opportunities already available, from the golf school through to the Evian Championship Juniors Cup (under 14s) and the Haribo Kids Cup (8 to 12 year olds).
The main feature of the partnership with the AJGA is the creation of a new mixed tournament for under 18s. The Evian Junior Event, organized at the Evian Resort Golf Club in October of this year, will enable the formation of Team France, comprising the event's top 8 players (6 boys, 2 girls). The selected players will then be given the opportunity to compete in the Evian International & Senior Showcase in Las Vegas where they could be spotted by the leading US college coaches. Further big news: the Evian Resort Golf Club is to host the Arnold Palmer Cup in July 2018. It will be the 22nd edition of this major confrontation between 2 mixed college teams, a US team against an international one.
"We are delighted and honoured to become a partner of the AGJA" declares Franck Riboud, Chairman of The Evian Championship. "The AJGA's mission resonates perfectly with the policy undertaken by the Evian Resort and The Evian Championship to promote the development of the upcoming generation of golfers. We are convinced that the future of golf lies in these young players already on the verge of success."
