So Yeon Ryu: “Added pressure”

Winner of the first major of the season, the ANA Inspiration, and runner-up last year in Evian, the world number 1 So Yeon Ryu, is one of the main contenders for the Rolex Annika Major Award, which each year rewards the top-performing players in the five majors on the calendar. The Korean champion spoke about Evian and her current position as world number 1.

I'm very fortunate to be staying at the Hôtel Royal like all the past winners. I want to win The Evian Championship and I want to stay at this hotel for the rest of my career! I'm a huge fan of Evian, French cuisine, baguette sandwiches, just walking around town. Evian is really a great place to compete in a Grand Slam tournament

Actually like being world No. 1 is a lot of pressure. In part of my mind, I never forget that I can win the title of player of the year, I'm close to the Rolex Annika Major Award. With this mindset, I tell myself I'm never allow myself to make a bogey, I will never allow myself to finish outside of the top 10. But we are not robots. To be honest, I've not played very well since my victory at the US Open. I took a few days off recently, which was good for me. I want to enjoy myself and reach my goals, among other things hold on to being world number 1 and become player of the year on the LPGA Tour.

Lexi Thompson : It's key to hit straight off the tee

Victorious last week in Indianapolis on the LPGA Tour, Lexi Thompson is now right behind So Yeon Ryu in the world rankings. The American finished runner-up at the Evian Championship 2015, and is once again one of the favorites this year.

It's definitely been a crazy up-and-down year for me, a lot of emotions behind it (Lexi Thompson lost at the Ana Inspiration in a play-off after receiving 4 penalty points while in the lead with six holes to go. But that made me realised that I was strong.

The Evian Resort Golf Club course means you have to hit it straight out here, lots of holes are tree-lined and the fairways tight. They key here is to hit straight to score well. This is going to be even more important this week. I can't remember playing with so much wind since I've been coming France.
